You would be afraid to walk, where they toiled day-to-day. They worked their whole lives at the risk of their health, either acutely or chronically, just to live and support their families.

Theirs was a world of extremes-from the North Mill, with its red-hot steel, iron and an oppressive layer of soot to the South Mill, with its clean swept floors and gleaming finished products- tinplate, pipe and I-beams. They knew the contrast also between the blast furnace, a veritable "hell on earth", where the hot iron flowed as the acrid smell of combustibles permeated the air contrasted with the eerie calm and darkness found working by the river at 3:00 a.m.

The Mill, The Jones and Laughlin Aliquippa Works was once the largest integrated steelmaking plant in the world. The mill no longer exists, but go stand on the site by the Ohio River and you will feel the memories and the presence of those are gone before you...I have.

His grandfather worked as a blast furnace water tender for 55 years, and his father worked as a rigger at the mill until his death in an industrial accident in 1973. His mother was also employed as a machinist helper, and Vukmir himself worked as a summer employee in the blast furnace as well in the Aliquippa plant.

Rade B. Vukmir MD,JD is President of Critical Care Medicine Associates, a medical administrative and consulting enterprise founded in 1991. He is certified in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, and has a degree in law with a certificate in health law. Dr. Vukmir has written forty-three medical journal articles, and is the author of ten books.

About the Author
Raised in Aliquippa, a steel town in western Pennsylvania, Rade B. Vukmir, J.D., grew up in a family that was intimately involved in the steel industry. His grandfather worked as a blast furnace watertender for fifty-five years and his father worked as a rigger at the mill until his death in an industrial accident in 1973. His mother was also employed as a machinist's helper and Vukmir himself worked as a summer employee in the blast furnace as well at the Aliquippa plant.
With advanced degrees in both medicine and law, Dr. Vukmir is president of Critical Care Medicine Associates, a medical administrative and consulting enterprise.
Dr. Vukmir has written forty-three medical journal articles and is the author of seven books, including Outcome of the Critically Ill: Medicine, Surgery and Trauma (Parthenon Publishing, 2000), Airway Management in the Critically Ill (Parthenon Publishing, 2001), Lessons Learned (University Press of America, 2003); The ER: A Year in the Life (Hamilton Books, 2005); The ER: One Good Thing a Day (Hamilton Books, 2008), and The Maximally Efficient and Optimally Effective Emergency Department (University Press of America, 2009).

a lost world comes to life

An impressive collection of oral histories from people that worked all aspects of a stell mill. The book is smartly divided into chapters where each chapter represents a section of the steel mill operations: "blast furnace, clerical, management, union, electrical, railroad" etc, and one person is represented for each of these chapters to tell the story of his specific duties and life. It includes pictures, diagrams, and charts. After reading the oral histories, one can follow somewhat their histories by reading the layout plans and the diagrams. All these people are now old, and soon gone. Only their stories will be left. The epilogue of the book is a silent display of black and white pictures of Aliquippa today: boarded up stores, abbandoned buildings and streets, images that constrast sharply with the other photographs in the book of joyful parades and crowded streets. Amazing how a boom town was created in response to a momentary economic force such as steel industry, and now is semi-state of abbandon. Sounds almost like a science fiction movie, of lost worlds of thriving communities, but that this book brings back to life.

Great concept, reads like a first draft, not a finished book

I love this subject so the previous reviewer's comments about the poor editing didn't dissuade me from buying the book. There is a lot of information here, but it reads like a pile of notes bound together and not a coherent book. Here's an example" In the foreword, there's a four-column newspaper article which is a letter the author's grandfather wrote to the local paper about a strike. Great material for sure. But the columns are out of order (no fact checking) and there's no text to explain the context, like "This letter was written during the largest strike in, etc etc, and end by etc. etc." The letter is just thrown on the page.

And then throughout the book, as the workers tell their steelmaking tales, I kept thinking that the author should take a line or two and explain what the workers mean. We could skip many of the workers because they essentially say the same thing. So it'd be better to use the pages to put the language in layman's terms as much as possible. Then we'd have a historical record that future generations can understand.

I hate to criticize. There's something here and it could be fantastic, but it needs a good book editor to have a whack at it. As much as I love reading about old steel mills, an interest that I can't explain, I didn't finish this book.

I enjoyed reading this book in its "true" format. Real people speaking their real response. Not something editied to make it sound real. You really needed to feel the words as people spoke to get the real meaning of how they thought. You could feel what it was like to have lived in that town during those days. Real people, real thoughts, Just honest people that did a job. Granted it was not always pretty and neat but when you LISTEN to them you understand what it was like to really work in a tough and dangerous place. I found this book a great insite into how America works. I visited that area last year and you can only think back to what it was like in the day!!!

Dee Ann Turner has worked for Chick-fil-A for more than 30 years and currently serves as Vice President, Corporate Talent. Over the years, she has played a key role in growing Chick-fil-A’s unique and highly regarded culture while overseeing recruitment, selection, and retention of corporate staff and the recruitment and selection of Chick-fil-A franchisees. Dee Ann's insightful knowledge and applicable tools to building an positive and influential company culture are revealed in her book, It's My Pleasure: The Impact of Extraordinary Talent and A Compelling Culture.

Dee Ann attended Cincinnati Christian University in Cincinnati, Ohio, majoring in journalism and Christian education. She completed her education at Clayton State University in Atlanta with a degree in management. She received further certifications at Goizueta School of Business at Emory University, Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC Chapel Hill, and she also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Dee Ann is currently a board member for the Kenya Project, which provides education, homes, food and spiritual growth for children in Kenya. One of the best books on organizational culture I have ever read.

I have read dozens, if not hundreds of books on corporate culture, vision, mission, core values, company purpose… And this is absolutely one of the finest. I picked it up in an airport and read it on a one hour flight and almost used up an entire highlighting pen. This is one of the most concise, clear and understandable descriptions of how to build a strong organizational culture. Whether you run a large organization or a small business, this book will give you wonderful ideas about how to improve/strengthen your business. I have several clients that I'm going to send a copy of this book because it does such a superb job of sharing critical business ideas. Also, I was concerned that because the book was about Chick-fil-A it would have a significant amount of religious overtones – there is some discussion of religion the book, but it is not overwhelming, so people of any faith will be able to find value in reading it. I give this book a very strong recommendation.

A must read for anyone leading or on a team

Managing people is a difficult task and Dee Ann Turner doesn't avoid that fact. But what she does is lays out a clear path for managing people and building teams in such a way that the positive culture produces the desired result. The power of culture does the hard work instead of constantly tinkering or managing the people. Creating this kind of culture is hard work and after 30 years of work at Chick-fil-A Dee Ann Turner seems to be a hardened veteran at it. The value of this book is in its simplicity, applicability and transferability to almost any team setting. People are complicated but this book simplifies the process in a very powerful way. A must read for anyone leading or on a team.

Time Well Spent

This DIY soft cover book for dads and their daughters(although moms and boys could be involved, too!) offers a couple dozen projects ranging from science to magic to music to artistic to silly.

We have two daughters ages 7 & 10, and since I'm off on Mondays, mom takes a break, and we do Daddy-daughter day. We homeschool and always are looking for various learning activities that capture the imagination, encourage creativity and allow the children to participate wholeheartedly. This is a neat book that spells out all kinds of fun and education as well.

There's a short intro explaining the nature of making mistakes, a page for the Maker Dad Toolbox, stuff like, rat-tail file, surform shaver, pen-type soldering iron, brushes, screwdrivers, and such; however, you can pick out your project and put together your material list as needed.

He features differing degrees of difficulty(more like time involved), and gives a short talk about how the idea came to pass, a list of what's needed and a step by step guide with pictures(ours were in B&W for the advanced reading copy- not sure if they'll be in color-would be nice).

So far, the projects we've done have turned out as expected: make a antigravity jar- pretty basic magic trick requiring tape, thread, metal clip jar with lid, magnet and a pair of scissors; some woodworking tasks like making a simple "Mid-century Chair- Dad needs to do the jigsawing; make a giant bubble making wand- took a bit of work and right conditions to get it going.

These projects require, obviously, supervision, but the key, I think, is to allow the youngsters to do as much of the work as possible, which can be hard for a do-it-all dad to stand; however, it may take longer but that's more and better time spent with them.

Overall, a well laid out DIY book to entice quality fun time for parents and children together- more is needed.

Informative, but you need a deep toolkit

I was excited to get this book, because I enjoy doing little projects around the house with my daughters. And there are some really, really neat projects in here, although most are likely best for kids at least slightly older than mine. It is clearly written, with step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow, and the author's personal notes give you context for each project.

I don't think, though, that I'll be making many of the projects in the book, mostly because I don't have the tools to do so. Looking at the helpful list of tools you'll need, there are some things I'd imagine would be in every house (hammer, pushpins, scissors) and others that might not be (30-watt soldering iron, rotary cutting tool, Surform Shaver). Investing in the tools to make everything in this book is quite a big step if you're not sure you'll be able to actually execute the plans with any degree of competence, and I can see how people who aren't skilled at using the tools could be put off by that.

If you've got a ton of tools already, though, this is a great book that will give you some good ideas on things you can make with your kids.

Empowering

I loved making things with my Dad in his workshop, and it wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized how special I/he was for those experiences. Now, as a young adult, it's even clearer how stronger I am as a woman for it. There is a Verizon commercial running right now about how impressionable girls are to adult's unintentional gender-normative language around hobbies, that I think is fabulous and totally related to the goals of this book. At the end it points out that 66% of 4th grade girls like science and math, but only 18% of college engineering majors are female.

I love the activities in this book, almost as much as my husband and daughter do. They had a ball with the lunchbox guitar and have their sights set next for silk-screening. This is not the first book I have bought at the beginning of summer vacation for project ideas, but it's definitely one of the best. Another I highly suggest is The Boy Electrician. My husband had it as a kid and has recreated some of the projects with out daughter.
