About the Author
Richard Taruskin is Class of 1955 Professor of Music at the University of California, Berkeley. He is coeditor (with Piero Weiss) of Music in the Western World: A History in Documents (Second Edition, 2007), as well as the author of Stravinsky and the Russian Traditions: A Biography of the Works Through Mavra (1996) and Text and Act: Essays on Music and Performance (OUP, 1995).
Christopher H. Gibbs is James H. Ottaway Jr. Professor of Music at Bard College, Co-Artistic Director of the Bard Music Festival, and Associate Editor of The Musical Quarterly. He edited The Cambridge Companion to Schubert (1997), coedited Franz Liszt and His World (2006), and is the author of The Life of Schubert (2000). Gibbs is a recipient of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award and was a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. Since 2000, Gibbs has served as program annotator and consulting musicologist for The Philadelphia Orchestra, where he frequently gives lectures. Gibbs also gives lectures at other orchestras, Carnegie Hall, "Great Performers" at Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I love this book but...

I love this book and I am very happy with it but Oxford Press failed to provide enough copies of the cds, sold separately, that accompany the book.
I think this is the best history of music on print.
There are other excellent books on history of music but they are all out of print.
Books such as the five volumes "Heritage of Music", also published by Oxford University Press.
I am educating myself on classical music and was more than happy when I found this book. I immediately ordered it as I already knew
the five volumes edition but 4000 pages in five volumes is really too much for my interests and priorities as I am not a musician.
This "College Edition" is a condensed version of the five volumes, 4000 pages edition.
But here condensed doesn't mean short. The book has 1200 pages and about 400 plates in colour or
black and white.
The book is very well written, very intelligent, very comprehensive and perfectly accessible to non musicians without dumbing down.
The book has, actually, been written by Christopher H. Gibbs, not Taruskin. Gibbs, a professor of music at Bard College, was given the task to abridge Taruskin's five volumes in order to
create a textbook. But good part of Taruskin's text is in this abridged version exactly as they are in the original five volumes collection.
I went straight to the chapter about Wagner in order to know if it is a serious book where music is what really matters or if it is dictated by the mediocrity of political correctness.
I was glad to see that, in this book, music is what really matters.
This edition, unlike the five volumes edition, has much less scores than the bigger edition.
They are replaced by referrals to a three volumes set of cds that accompany this book and are sold
separately. Volumes one and three have two cds each. Volume two has three cds.
Here, a WARNING: It is very difficult to find the set of cds, despite the fact that they were published only last year.
It is the reason why I rated the book as a four stars product, instead of five.
I couldn't find the cds on Amazon UK. I found them on Amazon US but volume 1 is not available at this moment. Volumes 2 and 3 are available but I found only one new volume 2, for example.
The other ones are used. The three volumes will cost about $ 200, that is, if you can find volume 1. The set of cds is essential for a better use of this book and
Oxford University Press should have more sets available .
Score anthologies are also being sold separately. They have scores of the most important works presented in the book and are available in three volumes at Amazon UK.
They are easy to find but for the person who is not a musician, like me and many other customers, the set of cds is much more useful but they are very difficult to find and very expensive
because of that.
One alternative would be to do a DIY and look for the musical examples in the book one by one but that would take a lot of time and money.
When I buy something I expect to buy a finished product, not a part finished part DIY one.
There is also a concise edition with 3 cds that is being sold at Amazon US for $80. I couldn't find this one on Amazon UK as well, even after searching with the ISBN number.
The best way to look for the cds is to get the ISBN number of the sets of cds from Amazon US and type them on Campusbook's site. You will have a list of
places where you can find the cds in the US. I looked but couldn't find something similar for the UK.

P.S. I contacted the publisher and was told that they will reprint the volume one, which will be available at some later this month (september).
Meanwhile, I bought the concise edition from Amazon US for £64. , that has about half of the music examples referred in the book. They come in a nice, thin case. The sound is absolutely excellent.
They are not normal cds but cds of mp3 files so, if you want to order the cds, check if you cd player plays mp3 before ordering the discs.
The quality of sound is excellent. The set of three discs has 190 tracks and almost 15 hours of music!

A must read

Every professional musician, music student, and music lover should read this book. It covers the music history from Gregorian Chant to our years in a simple and concise way. Each chapter features maps, scores, and charts that help the comprehension of the topic covered. Perhaps the authors spend far too many pages on American composers, but that's the way things are done in that part of the world. It is a heavy book, and perhaps it would be best if it was sold in two volumes.
