Death Weavers (Five Kingdoms Book 4), by Brandon Mull

Trapped in a world where magic is powerful and dreams are real, Cole’s epic adventure continues in book four of the New York Times bestselling “fanciful, action-packed adventure” series (Publishers Weekly, starred review), from the author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series.

Cole is about to face his biggest peril yet.

Since arriving in the Outskirts, Cole and his friends have fought monsters, challenged knights, and battled rampaging robots. But none of that has prepared them for Necronum.

In this haunting kingdom, it’s hard to tell the living from the dead, and secret pacts carry terrifying risks. Within Necronum lies the echolands, a waystation for the departed where the living seldom venture.

Still separated from his power, Cole must cross to the echolands and rely on his instincts to help rescue his friends. With enemies closing in, Cole risks losing everything to find the one thing that might save them.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Since coming to the Outskirts, Cole Randolph and his friends have defeated monsters, challenged knights, fought psycho robots, lost powers, and helped Mira and some of her sisters get their powers back. While traveling through Necronum in search of Mira's sisters Destiny and Honor, Cole and his friends have been trying to stay one step ahead of Nazeem, an evil shapecrafter. Disaster soon strikes, however, and Cole's friends are forcibly taken to the Echolands (land of the dead), the lands controlled by Nazeem. If Cole ever wants to get home, he must find a way to stop Nazeem. Keith Nobbs's dynamic, engaging narration style draws listeners into Cole's world. He easily transitions between action and dialogue scenes while maintaining a good pace. Mull's plot and characters are well developed and will make listeners want to find out what happens next. VERDICT Series fans will have a hard time putting this audiobook down.—Kira Moody, Whitmore Public Library, Salt Lake City

Review
Cole's ongoing quest to rescue friends and findfour lost princesses in the dreamlike Outskirts takes him to a land where theborder between life and death is permeable.Gaining and losing various alliesand princesses as he goes, Cole journeys through both Necronum, populated bythe living and also spectral "echoes," and the "echolands,"a sort of borderland halfway house for the dead, on the way to a face-off withthe demonic shapecrafter Nazeem. As if the cast wouldn't already fill a bus,Mull trots in even more characters—including some from his Beyonders series—ashe pushes his young hero into a drawn-out series of chases and races both afootand atop a mysterious magical horse. The author spins a big, fluent, notentirely earnest yarn, but he seems to be stuck on certain plot devices.Infodumps (along with side topics like the meaning of life), for instance, arerepeatedly delivered through extended question-and-answer sessions that readlike magazine interviews, and so often does Cole hear some variation on "Idon't know, but I can tell you who might," that even he finally slaps hisforehead: "No offense, but do you know how many times I've heardthis?" But, by the end Nazeem has been temporarily stymied, Cole hasacquired shapecrafting powers of his own, and the ducks are queuing for theupcoming climax. Much rushing about from here to there in this penultimatebrick, but it's basically a smooth ride to the closer. (Fantasy. 10-13) (Kirkus Reviews 5/1/16)

Hero Cole Randolph returns in this fourth of a a planned five books, this time adventuring in the unstable
and terrifying land of Necronum. Filled with echoes, ghosts, shades, and enemies, Necronum is different
from everything Cole knows, and as he searches for information about the whereabouts of friends Honor
and Destiny, Cole and his crew finds more than they bargained for. Cole, at a loss without his magical
powers, has some soul-searching to do, as well. Intrigue and chills build higher as the group seeks out the
Cave of Memory for answers while trying to follow clues from Queen Harmony. Equally as compelling as
the adventure is the development of interpersonal relationships between Cole and his band of friends. Cole
continues to be the everykid champion, and he remains one of the most enduring reasons readers return to
this engrossing series. Series fans are already begging for this hotly anticipated title; multiple copies are a
must.

Missing the usual Mull Magic
By Kaye A. Alfafara
There were parts where the author dragged too much on the details of the Echolands. It was annoying how the protagonist was led to one place that would lead him to another place in order to find the information he was looking for. It's as frustrating as going through a lot of bureaucratic red tape.

I also expected more of the crossover with his Beyonder Series but was rather disappointed. I don't know... it just seems that he was "killing pages" (like killing time) by going over those details. The action didn't come until towards the last couple of chapters-- which felt it was forced. The good thing is that, he wrote the "action scenes" so well which sort of redeemed the drag the story took on in the middle. Those last scenes became the oasis - the saving grace of this particular installment which explains my rating. It only goes to show that Mull is truly a wonderful story weaver if he probably didn't have to cover the required number of pages. Oh well, that's just my assumption though. The bottomline is that, this book didn't seem to have the usual Mull magic that was spread out in his other books. Of course I know and understand how tough writing a book is but also know he can do waaaaaayyyy much better.

The important question is... would I still want to read the final installment? It's a big YES. I still have faith in how he will complete the story. I had a blast reading his Beyonders and Fablehaven series. I am expecting something that would make me want to read the entire series all over again.

Next book please!
By Dillon Mccardell
I've recently made a point of going back and reading some of my favorite childhood novels. But now 5 years later, and being 16, those books just never live up to my earlier thoughts and praise. They seem to be so childish and the plot line so cliché, I just couldn't handle it. But reading this book now, I'm amazed. This author is fabulous and you can tell that he has some great writing skills just from a few lines. "His gums shown wetly as he smiled my way." Now I'm not sure if that's the correct wording, but I just remember that line as being important and well said. Besides that awesome fact though, you can also tell that Brandon Mull puts many many many months of thought into his plot line. I can just imagine the board on the wall full of pine and red string connecting everything in the plot to one another. It's fantastic. If you love books, read this one. Please.

Death Weavers
By Amazon Customer
Brandon Mull I love, love, love your writing. Bringing Farren and Drake into this book gave me warm fuzzies. This series is so good I hate it ending. I added this series to my list of favorites along with Fable Haven and the Beyonders and of course Candy Shop Wars. I appreciate you using the gift our Father in Heaven gave you in writing good books for tweens that grandmothers like me can enjoy too. Thank you again!!!
