As Sassen shows, these two quasi-legal realms now have the power and legitimacy to demand action and accountability from national governments, with the ironic twist that both depend upon the state to enforce their goals. From the economic policy shifts forced by the Mexico debt crisis to the recurring battles over immigration and refugees around the world, Losing Control? incisively analyzes the events that have radically altered the landscape of governance in an era of increasing globalization.

About the Author
Gene A. Davis received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Chicago (1968). He worked as an industrial research chemist, senior scientist, R and D director, and consultant for 30 years, and he has authored 28 publications and patents. Great Overview of Organic Chemistry

"Organic Chemistry made ridiculously simple" is a great supplementary text. Its emphasis on first principles helps to establish a solid starting point for any organic chemistry student. It is direct and easy to understand with great diagrams, many examples, and occasional humor that help to introduce and emphasize various basic organic concepts. This emphasis on basic and core concepts helps to set up an intuitive foundation for branching out to other more complex subject areas. I would recommend this book in addition to the standard course text for any student and perhaps especially for a student who may be struggling a bit with this subject.

I recommend this book as a straight forward outline of organic chemistry. It is an excellent supplement to use during an organic chemistry course.

* It is organized along the lines of a standard organic textbook

* There seems to be a good mix of regular organic chemistry and biological applications

* I found it very easy to find what I was looking for

Excellent supplemental and review text.

I found this book very helpful if one needs a quick review of Org Chem. I have not taken any Org Chem courses since 1971 so at first I was totally lost. But when I used this text as a supplement to a Org Chem textbook like Morrison & Boyd's (my old 1971 copy!) the stuff made sense.

I suspect that this is a "test oriented" book for med students but I found it as an excellent supplemental text. If you are currently taking a Org Chem course then this book will definitely help. If you have been out of the loop for a while don't expect this book alone to get you up to speed.

I found this book to be very thought-provoking. I am really surprised at how it has affected my viewpoint of the world and life in general. When you see life as a mixture of chance and fate, you realize that the major challenges in life are just as important as the best things in life. You realize that the people that have hurt you have provided valuable lessons that your soul needed to know in order to become complete and join with what I term as the Unity (of which I am writing my own book). I have found that these ideas are very hard for many people to grasp, but we must know pain to truly know pleasure. We must weep to experience happiness. There can never be one without the other.
My only complaint is that this did not do a whole lot in looking at Western civilazation's view on reincarnation such as the Celt's belief of a spiral of life. Otherwise, this is a sparkling gem of a book with a title that makes it only seem dulled.

Good overview, could have been better

I really enjoyed this book, overall. The only flaw I found in it was an erroneous statement regarding Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. The book states that Tibetan Buddhists believe the Dalai Lama to be the 14th reincarnation of the Buddha. This is incorrect. They believe him to be the 14th reincarnation of Chenrezig, or Kuan Yin, the Bhudda of Compassion..not, as the book implies the reincarnation of "The Buddha," or Sidhartha Gautama. The author seems to not have grasped the fact that there are many Buddha's, indeed that the basic Buddhist belief is that we are ALL potential Buddhas. Besides that, though, I did find the book to be thought-provoking and useful for anyone interested in exploring this subject, whether you are a beleiver in reincarnation or a skeptic.

Helpful perspectives for those working in international schools

As an administrator working at an international school in Taiwan, I have been delving into literature on education, particularly books that discuss a number of issues found in international schools. Every essay here is written by a school head, university professor, or teacher with much experience in the international school field, and each has a real contribution to make to this field. For giving me an opportunity to dive down a rabbit's hole with all the research cited in each essay, I am grateful.

The reason for three stars is this: many of the essays included here are too philosophical in their approaches to education to be of practical use for readers. While there is value to be found in these philosophical meanderings, I find the essays that include specific applications, case studies, or those that use examples of current schools exhibiting the philosophy or the ideas at hand, to be the most helpful and the most accessible. Accessibility of essay = easier to understand and relate to = more success to be had by the reader when he/she applies what has been learned in reading the essay.

The chapters that succeed most in contributing helpful advice include chapter 9 ("Professional development and reflective practice"), chapter 11 ("The international school and its community"), and chapter 12 (Moving from school effectiveness to school improvement").
