Ingrid Beirer is head of the Berlin Artist Program of German Academic Exchange Program.

Carsten Seiffarth: Born 1963. Musicologist, founder and artistic director of the sound art gallery singuhr Hoergalerie Berlin and one of the artistic directors of the media art laboratory Tesla Berlin. As an independant cuator and producer he initiates and produces internationally exhibitions and projects in the sound art context.

Sabine Himmelsbach, born in 1966, is an art historian; she has been director of the Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg since September 2005.

Paul DeMarinis has been working as an electronic media artist since 1971 and has created numerous performance works, sound and computer installations and interactive electronic inventions. He has performed internationally, at The Kitchen, Festival d'Automne a Paris, Het Apollohuis in Holland and at Ars Electronica in Linz and created music for Merce Cunningham Dance Co. His interactive audio artworks have been shown at the I.C.C. in Tokyo, Bravin Post Lee Gallery in New York and The Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Public artworks include large scale interactive installations at Park Tower Hall in Tokyo, at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and Expo 1998 in Lisbon and an interactive audio environment at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport in 2003.

An inspiring reference for media art

One of the most thought provoking artists living today, Paul DeMarinis, has been working as an electronic media artist since 1971, and one of the first artists to use computers in performance. A tireless inventor, he has made fire speak, rain sing and ceramics remember in his numerous sound and computer installations and interactive electronic inventions, all while finding time to create music for Merce Cunningham Dance Co. DeMarinis has won a Guggenheim and Rockefeller awarded and the Golden Nica for Interactive Art at the prestigious Ars Electronica in Linz Austria. This book chronicles projects such as "The Edison Effect" that generates sounds from ancient phonograph records with lasers, "Gray Matter" that uses the interaction of body and electricity to make music, and "The Messenger" and "Firebirds" that examine the myths of electrical communication. This book is beautifully printed, a 288 page hardbound in full color, with one page descriptions on each project, plus essays by the most prominent figures in media art including Douglas Kahn, author of the sole source on audio art history published by MIT: Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts, along with other notable essayests: Gascia Ouzounian, Fred Turner, Bernd Schulz, Thomas Levin, Erkki Huhtamo and Siegfried Zielinsky. It describes DeMarinis's work exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco and public artworks including large-scale interactive installations at Tokyo, at the Olympics in Atlanta, at Expo in Lisbon, and an interactive audio environment at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport. Paul DeMarinis has been an Artist-in-Residence at The Exploratorium and at Xerox PARC and teaches at Stanford. Disappointed At UTPA

International Books sent me a "1979" version of book "Pricing" by Monroe. The book I viewed and purchased via amazon did not look like the copy I received which was a hardcover green book 1979 edition. This should never happened and I expect a full refund from Amazon and/or International books.

Monsters, according to popular opinion, live under beds. Koller (the Mole and Shrew books), rather than deny these beasts' existence, questions their frightful intentions. In this mildly suspenseful tale, a boy named Howard tells his mother, "I heard [a monster] snurkling under my bed." Meanwhile, a young monster informs his mother that he hears a boy "sneezing on top of my bed." Left alone by their disbelieving parents, human and monster peek at each other and shriek in fear; only when their terror turns to tears do they dare a second, curious look. On the closing page, they trade places for a practical joke that's left to the reader's imagination: " 'Oh, Mommy,' they both called together. 'Mommy, come quick!' " Lewin (Somebody Catch My Homework) draws in loose, Quentin Blake-style gestures of pen and ink, and fills the negative space with watercolor washes of dusky blue and brown. She envisions Monster (who reads a scary comic titled Boy) as a warty green gargoyle with clawed toes, a boar's snout and tusks. Koller invents a monster vocabulary: Monster "whimples" when Howard whimpers, and "sniggles" when his friend giggles. The plot is predictable and even a bit shopworn, yet the energetic telling and agreeable illustrations could put some fears temporarily to rest. Ages 4-8.

PreSchool-Grade 2. When Howard tells his mother about the monster under his bed, she says there's no such thing. Young Monster's mother says the same thing when he describes the boy on top of the bed. When the two at last meet, however, with an eye-popping mutual "Aagh!" it's clear that they have much in common, including parents long since fed up with their offspring's imaginations. The bonds of friendship forge, and the final page shows the two hatching a plan to scare their disbelieving moms. Like Mercer Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968), this is a satisfying version of the familiar tale of child/monster coexistence. It runs a gamut of emotions from apprehension to frustration (both child and parent), terror, empathy, to, finally, the friendly sharing of a good joke. Lewin's ink-and-wash cartoon scrawls lend just the right exaggerated and humorous touch to put Koller's all-too-likely scenario over the top. Ages 5^-8. Koller takes a familiar story and adds a humorous twist: from under the bed, a monster mother tells her frightened son, "There are no such things as boys." The story cuts back and forth, alternating typical night fright scenes between the boy and his mother with the monster version of the same scene taking place under the bed. In a clever final scene, boy and monster, having discovered each other, team up to trick the moms by switching places and giving one last call for help. Koller's timing is right on, and Lewin's illustrations, expressive watercolors accented with thick, loose black line, have the same fast, humorous pace as the story. Librarians who think they don't need another monster-under-the-bed story might want to reconsider. Lauren Peterson

A Favorite for Parents and Kids

We heard this book at Storytime at our local library and fell in love with it. The kids loved the boy and the monster teaching their Moms that there is "such a thing", and all the mothers in the room were laughing at the familiar nightime ritual of little boys-- with a surprise ending. It is my favorite children's book and I think every kid should have it. Let them go to bed laughing about monsters under the bed, instead of being afraid of them.

A laugh-out-loud bedtime story!

This is so funny, it had four adult women laughing out loud! A little boy on top of the bed and a little monster under the bed are both told by their mothers not to be afraid--there's no such thing as monsters/boys! But the boy hears a snurkle and the monster hears a sneeze, and they KNOW! Delightfully written, with a surprise ending that's perfect. Wonderful pictures, too.

A little laughter goes a long way to scare off the monsters in the dark!

This has been a favorite book in our family for years. Even now, when my teenage boys saw me getting ready to wrap this on up, they panicked! "You're not giving that away, are you Mom?" I had to reassure them that this was a new copy, not the one we had all shared. In fact, I'd purchased three so that I can eventually provide each of them with one of their own.

So why is this such a favorite? It turns the whole idea of the monster under the bed on its head! It eases those worries with great humor and a bit of fun at Moms' expense. And it teaches that you can't judge a person by what you've heard about them - you've got to find out for yourself - something that I liked a whole lot, but I don't think my sons ever noticed it (which is even better).

My daughter likes the modern story better, but I prefer this old familiar one

Had this book from my childhood with memories of reading it. Now there is another book called the Seven Chinese Brothers that my daughter really likes. I bought this to show her the story that I grew up with. Pictures and story are nostalgic for me. My daughter likes the modern story better, but I prefer this old familiar one.

Fond memory

I was in first grade in 1974, it was the first time our class went to the library. The librarian discussed with us some books she had picked out and one was, The five chinese brothers. By the time she had finished describing the book I knew what book I wanted to check out. And when she gave the permission to look around, I ran for that book, and I read it, read it, and am getting to read it again 24 years later. I dont exactly know how, but I feel somehow that book helped me be..who I am, because I never forgot that memory.

OUTSTANDING

This is the first book I have read by Monk and I can not wait to start another. The characters were "bewitching", I truly can not say enough about this other than GET IT NOW!

4.5 STARS. I really enjoyed this book, there was just one point where it was predictable & annoying.

This is the second book I've read by Karyn Monk. I'm impressed with her ability to keep a story exciting, romantic, funny, and suspenseful all in one. Although her language tends to be a bit too modern and American for the location and era of her stories, she provides good scenery and character development. Her heroes tend to be smart and powerful, but still vulnerable and human. Never too much unnecessary info. Her books keep you hooked from start to finish.

My main complaint about this story came towards the end. The actions of the heroine were the usual "I have to leave everyone who loves me in order to save them." I also didn't like the fact that she had so little faith in her man and his army's ability to protect their own castle and people. She was sure their enemy would slaughter them. Never mind that it took only the hero and three of his men to save her from her enemy's castle in the first scene. Otherwise, a very enjoyable read.

The Story:

Since she was born, Gwendolyn MacSween has been feared and hated as a witch. She has given up on trying to convince her clan that she is just a regular woman. Her cruel and greedy cousin, Robert, has made them all believe that she used witchcraft to murder her father. Her clan throws a celebration as they tie her to a stake and prepare burn her to death.

Alex is the laird of the clan MacDunn. He needs a miracle. His son, David, is dying and no healer has been able to save the boy. Having heard of the MacSween witch, he has come to the MacSween clan in hopes of bringing her back to his castle to save David. When they arrive, they are welcomed to join in the celebration of the burning of the witch. Alex and his men must rescue her from the burning stake so that they can take her to save David. She is Alex's last hope for his son's life.

Upon arriving at MacDunn castle, it is obvious that the clan loathes the idea of having a witch in their midst. The people are hostile, trying every ritual possible to save themselves from her evil spells. One clan member is even making attempts to kill her. Alex must protect her so that she can heal his son.

Over the following weeks, Gwendolyn endures being accused of trying to murder David with her unusual healing practices. She survives attempts on her life, ridicule, and hatred. At first, she endures because Alex has promised her freedom if his son is saved. After weeks of caring for David, Gwendolyn's reason for saving him becomes the love she feels for the sweet child. She also is beginning to love the boy's father.

Alex is tormented by memories of his wife's death. He is certain that the loss of his son would push him past the boundaries of sanity. As he finds himself attracted to Gwendolyn, he fights his guilt at the thought of betraying his oath to never love any woman other than his wife.

Robert MacSween is determined to take Gwendolyn back, even if it means bringing war against the MacDunn clan. He will take her and make her give him the magic stone. Once he wishes upon it, he will make himself the invincible ruler of all of Scotland. The thought of Alex's clan suffering because of her is more than Gwendolyn can stand. She decides to sacrifice herself for the sake of these people who have been so cruel to her. Alex is not about to let go of her. What Gwendolyn doesn't realize is that much of MacDunn clan has come to love her as their own. They will fight to save her from Robert, even if it means their own deaths.

On Thin Ice

I watched a YouTube video a while back about Robert Hansen, and it seemed that the story was so twisted it couldn't be real. I am going to see "The Frozen Ground," an upcoming film later this summer with Nicholas Cage and John Cusack about the same subject matter. So I decided to download this book and read it since it should have given more background information about Robert Hansen. (I am a pretty big fan of Mr. Cusack's, he's done some very nice work in his career -- watch "High Infidelity" or "Gross Pointe Blank" if you disagree with me -- and so I'm guessing that the film might be really good.)

"Hunted on Ice" was cheap, so it didn't bother me that no one had reviewed it previously. I'll admit, I didn't notice that the book is only 40-50 pages; if I had I probably would have passed. But just because a book is short doesn't mean that it has no value. I read a book entitled, "Finding Karla" a while back, and even though it was about the same length, it was a mildly interesting read while this one was fairly blah. But the real issue with this book: I learned almost nothing new about the case while reading that I didn't already know, and the documentary was surely better.

And the writing is surely amateurish; single quotes are used where there should be double quotes, periods and commas are outside of quotation marks, etc. The editing is pretty terrible; from what I remember, there was a sentence where "delegated" was used when I believe that the author intended "relegated." Many other issues existed, too numerous to discuss.

Peeking at the Bibliography, I believe that the author got all the information from the web, which means that you could do the same. And that would be my recommendation, or lack thereof; read what's available on the web and pass on this book.

After watching frozen ground I was looking for a more in depth account of the true story of Robert Hansen. This book was not it. The book is extremely short and lacks detail. It seemed more opinionated than story telling
