Essential Thai: The best Thai course on the market today...

My website reviews learning Thai products so I've acquired most every Thai course on the market. Essential Thai, in my opinion, is the best Thai course of its kind. Thai students everywhere waited for years for ET to be reprinted - kudos to Jim for making it so.

Too many Thai courses have farang Thai (sentences translated direct from English to Thai), teacher Thai (do as I say, not as I do Thai), and mangled Thai. Essential Thai is the real deal.

concise, clear and well organized

I've tried several Thai for beginner books and this is the best I've found so far. It does away with strict formal pattern of having an opening conversation to each chapter followed by grammar and some exercises. What the author did is take take a word/phrase in Thai and elaborate on the structure, and how you the learner can use it. For example, he teaches you on how to say nobody/somebody, coupled with sample sentences and let's you see how you can mix and match the words for future use.

It's like a tutor teaching you by your side, unlike a formal classroom type of learning, and this is more practical in absorbing Thai.

Amusing and old fashioned

This book is a long alphabtical list of literary faults by Ambrose Bierce (an American writer). It is mostly his own 'pet peeves' but this makes it amusing to read as he lists the correct way to say it, and often sounds very angry about the wrong way!! So I would recommend this book if you want to read about the formal 'correct' way to say anything, eg: 'I assumed a disguise' instead of 'I adopted a disguise'. He says you 'only adopt a child, not a disguise' :)

Caught Up with an Old Friend

When I was a young man I lived awhile with my stepgrandfather in San Diego, California. I remember he had a slim red volume called 'Write It Right', by Ambrose Bierce. It must have been a first edition, from around 1911, when he was around 21. He had penciled into the flyleaf, "He is at variance with Webster on several points." Gramps prided himself on good grammar and liked working crosswords and the Kingsley Double-Crostics that were published weekly at the back of the 'Saturday Review'. I enjoyed leafing through the Bierce, and noting with interest his preference for treating the noun 'the United States' as a plural. This, it seemed to me, reflected a conservative outlook that preceded, and resisted, federal efforts at promoting a strong sense of national unity. And that is where I place the value of this little volume, as an interesting historical relic of the English language as it was once spoken. Its standards are a lot tighter than our own, and for that reason I recommend it as a guide to the thought patterns of our ancestors living in that now remote time.

A remarkably effective reminder to wash your hands. Good book, too.

This was recommended to me by a microbiology professor, and a sound recommendation it was. Briefly, I'll discuss who it appeals to and then the book itself.

To frame my interest, I'm the sort of person who likes watching "How It's Made" and am fascinated by infectious disease and the countermeasures deployed against them. An interested layperson. If you've ever taken a Microbiology course (or something related), you can likely appreciate the nuance of what's happening. Otherwise, it might seem a little nebulous.

Bookwise, we step into the ancient world. Nowadays, the germ theory of disease is not contested. It is the reality we live in. If someone gets sick and there isn't a bone poking out of somewhere, we tend to blame germs. Professionals break up germs into many different divisions and categories, but for the most part, the medical profession can do something when you get sick. Like... cure you.

It becomes clear that illness was a more grave concern as recently as a century ago, something that wasn't conceivable for me before I read this book. Wife got sick after childbirth? Bye bye, wifey. Kids got sick? Well, crap. Better have more. In this day and age where we try to save so many lives, it strains credulity to imagine that life was so cheap.

Enter Domagk, a researcher at the bleeding edge of his field. This is a tale of a man who was obsessed with locating a 'magic bullet' to do away with infection. It was a riveting read, and I'm glad to have put the time into it.

One of the best popular science books I've read

This is a truly eye opening book. On the surface it describes the history of the
discovery of a synthetic antibiotic that is of limited use in modern medicine. But it
really is far more than that - it tells an important part of the story of how
the pharma and medicine that we know today came to be. Hager does not overreach -
he has a compelling story, and he tells it exceedingly well. But he also does a superb
job of putting it in both its historical and scientific context.

Nonlinear storytelling has become pretty common in modern science writing,
and it is can be pretty annoying - writers seem to selectively choose fractions
of episodes from the history that seem to support their (frequently very narrow)
thesis. In this book, Hager uses the same technique in a far more effective and
informative way. The interludes are themselves brief, but masterfully told,
histories of great discoveries in science and medicine.

About the Author
Garance Doré is a photographer, illustrator, author, and founder of an eponymous influential style blog. Winner of the CFDA Eugenia Sheppard Media Award, Doré has contributed both as a writer and photographer to publications including American, British, and Paris Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, T Magazine, Elle, The Guardian, and New York magazine. Originally from Corsica, she currently lives in New York City. This is her first book.

Better as a blog than a book

I was a little disappointed by this book. I was hoping for a kind of "style guide" with tips, and photos of great outfits I could wear. There were (in the first part of the book) quite a few photos of nice outfits, but I am always looking for ideas for outfits which do not involve high heels, and there weren't many here. It is hard to find these since the fashion magazines seem always to show high heels. I live in Manhattan and need to be able to walk around, take my son to school. etc, so I need mostly flat or low heels. The author, after saying that she herself did not really wear high heels except in the evenings, showed high heels in about 95 per cent of the photos!
The rest of the book was really general musings and a summary of her romantic history. The interviews with stylish people did not shed much light on being stylish (saying things like, "style comes from within", which doesn't mean much).

This is a prescriptive book on style by Garance Dore, a Frenchwoman, who may not represent "all" french women of course. The nonchalance with which an Arabic French woman carries herself is hardly the kind she is talking about. Something is wrong when people take it upon themselves to make sweeping generalizations about rather complex cultures, and classes within those cultures, and get away with it. This is hardly an academic book, but that is all the more reason why I didnt find it different from other books on cliched French style. Also we live in an age where humility, and vulnerability can be and are marketed, and both the blog and the book are good examples of this phenomena. Most of The style tips here smack of snobbery, and a rather upper class, elitist attitude, but they are so couched in accessibility that it is easy to fall prey to the belief that the writer is an emblem of modern simplicity. So the writer disses a bag with "google" written on it. No she cannot stand middle class products that suggest mass production and utility.. "simple" people rarely wear 800 dollar Valentino shoes, or 400 dollar acne sweaters. Nor are they at the front rows of most fashion shows. The interviews with women she admires in the book smack of the same elitist attitude that is so problematic, and well concealed in her blog. I got it and returned it.

Like the other reviewers who rated this work three stars or less, I was a bit disappointed and underwhelmed and feel that I would have rated this higher if had had more "meat on its bones." While I'm happy to support the work of the creatives whose output I enjoy, I feel like this wasn't money well spent. I could have learned as much by reading her blog.

My kids loved it!

My 7 year old daughter couldn't put this book down, as well as my twin 9 year old boys. I've never had so much interest in a book from my kids. They were fascinated and learned so much about such an amazing man by reading this well worded and meaningful book!

A look at BDSM

This book is full of advice and assignments to do if your into BDSM whether it be living it 24/7 or just at specific times and wether or not you have a Dom/Domme, I have been into BDSM for over 2 years now and have a Dom and we work on the book together and sometimes i work on it alone, it gives my Dom an insight into my thoughts and feelings and also gives him pleasure in setting me the daily tasks that i need to complete within the book before my next training session, I am a female Submissive but the workbook would also be suitable for male Subs, it keeps me in the mind set of being a Submissive even when my Master is not present.Its one great book and i would recommend it too anyone who is or is wanting to be a Submissive and whther you have or dont have a Master/Mistress.

Leading me on a path to service

I've been hanging on to a fantastic book for review for over a year now because according to all book sellers it is out of print. I would hate to give a review, especially the glowing review this book gets from me, and then you not able to buy it yourself. But, luckily, I found a second edition that is in print! It doesn't have the same title which is why it took me so long to connect the two, but when I did I was thrilled and you will be too.

The book I'm talking about is "The Path of Service - Guideposts for Excellence" by Christina "slavette" Parker. It has been out of print for years and if you go to the Amazon.com page for this book you can buy a used copy for over $200 right now. But don't do that. I have a much better solution.

Buy the 2nd edition. Trust me on this, it is well worth it.

Where I am Led: A Service Exploration Workbook is the 2nd edition of the aforementioned book. On the Amazon page it says it's the 2nd edition of the book that I coveted for a year but I didn't know until I opened it up and read the introduction to the book. I about squealed with joy. I could now share with you a book that has value to my submission and I knew that it would help you as well.

It is a workbook, and it written in a way that you have space to write in your thoughts to the tasks, questions and projects that you find throughout the book. I've reviewed a workbook in the past, but this one is definitely more useful in the organization, inspiration and personal growth potential. Here's what it has in store for you.

It's organized quite well and I haven't found a single page that isn't worth my time and energy to think about. You definitely want to read the "How to Use this Book" section at the beginning because it has useful tips for how to get started and to use the book successfully. You can do this book alone or with your Dominant. I even know of several submissives that are working through the book together.

Please do yourself a favor and buy this book. Where I am Led is an excellent personal growth tool for the submissive arsenal.

Even if your dynamic isn't super service-based, this workbook is definitely worth the time ...

I've just gotten past the 6-month mark in this workbook, and it's been very eye-opening. It has led to a lot of introspection and conversation with my partner, and I'm definitely learning more practical skills through the monthly assignments. Even if your dynamic isn't super service-based, this workbook is definitely worth the time and money. My only negative comment would be that some entries and writing points seem repetitive, but even so, the repetition sometimes get me to look at the same subject from a different angle. It has also been a great boost to me in my writing to have something that I must work on multiple times a week.
