Updated and comprehensive bible for tumor pathology

I was a little hesitant spending $400 of my $500 book fund allowed per year on this updated version of Fletcher. I have been using the departmental copy of the previous edition of this book so far and I can only say that this has been the best and most concise reference book for tumor pathology. I am impressed at how updated this new edition is. This will save me a lot of time going to read journal articles for updated classification schema and new variants of tumors etc. All in all, a great book to buy for a PGY-4 pathology resident and of course, for practicing pathologists. On the other hand, if you are just looking to buy just a single book to get by in pathology, this is not the best choice... just go for Silverberg or Rosai.
That said, the page design and layout within is very rich, useful and colorful..plus..it looks great on my home bookshelf getting furtive glances from every non-medico visitor at home..What more can you ask?

Outstanding review of tumor types

This two volume set contains the essentials for diagnosis of various tumors from benign to malignant in all organ systems and body parts. This is a great supplement to standard surgical pathology texts and presents the essential and esoteric diagnostic information in a concise formatted discussion using clinical information, gross and microscopic pathologic findings as well as various immunohistochemical and molecular markers for the various tumor entities. It is not as comprehensive as a specialty textbook dealing with single organ system pathology, but still serves well as a general diagnostic resource on the pathologist's shelf.

Excellent Compilation of Tumor Pathology

This new 2-volume set is well-written, clearly organized, and does an admirable job of covering the vast topic of tumor pathology. The pictures are crisp and colorful and can be downloaded from the accompanying CD's to be used in powerpoint presentations. Be aware that non-neoplastic disease is not covered, as this set is dedicated solely to tumors. Overall, well worth the money!

Interesting premise, but somewhat disappointing

Being both a fiction writer and historian, Emma Donahue has compiled a book of short stories based on events and people she came across in her research. In many cases all she had to work with were one or two sentences, a name, or a rather fantastic story. So she took it upon herself to create the stories and characters that might be behind these brief bits of information.
It's an interesting idea, and the actual writing is flowing and poetic, however, the majority of these stories ultimately disappointed me. Sometimes it's because her stories are a little too obvious, as with the title story. If you are going to write about a woman who is reported to have given birth to rabbits, and you want to give a logical explanation, a scam is about the only explanation you can come up with. THe only room for creativity is in why these folks decided to try it and how they came up with it, both of which I found to lack much depth.
The greatest shortcoming, however, was in the length of the stories. When the main purpose is to develop a character behind a bit of news, it requires far more words. THese stories were more on the order of short shorts. Yet because they were based on actual events, the surprise endings and plot turns required to make a short short work, are not here. Therefore the reader is ultimately left unsatisfied and wondering why the story needed to be written in the first place.
Oddly enough, the only story that appealed to me was the last one, Looking for Petronella. This story was quite a bit longer than the others and had more depth. The plot was also a lot more creative. It was almost as though the author needed to build her momentum to reach this point.
All in all this is not a bad read, but nothing I need to keep on my bookshelf.

If you ever wondered...

...what the lives of others were like, the others being those figures in history you may have heard or read about, or perhaps just a no-name other, then this is the book for you. Ms. Donoghue finds snippets of information about historical women and crafts a little larger snippet of life for them. The stories are not long, and I feel justifiably so. These are just tastes, just notions of what life might have been like. They are dreams, creations on a whim to explain the life of a woman so very long ago in England.
Ms. Donoghue's writing is wonderful. It has a musical quality, shows its humor and tenderness, greed and hesitation. Her imagination is rich and deep, and her research astounding for such small stories.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that I would easily recommend.

Such an amazing short story collection - Emma Donoghue's historic fiction is gorgeously written. As a historian, Donoghue has stumbled upon brilliant sotries of extraordinary women lost over time. These seventeen vivacious tales take us back through the last few centuries in England and Ireland, fleshing out personal accounts discovered through lost letters and archives.

The first story, "The Last Rabbit" is an excellent build up for the entire collection. Donoghue narrates the experiences of Mary Toft, who in the 1700's tricked her Irish town and half of London into believing that she could give birth to rabbits. While medical experts tried to desperately to disprove the hoax, Mary suffers the indignities of being a medical marvel, suffering embarrasing examinations from an assortment of "birth experts" and speculators. Her own comentary practically relates childbirth to a form of prostitution, which makes sense that in the last scene she discovers that she has been taken to a brothel to give birth to her rabbits. Marriage, childbirth and the historical low status of women take up most of the storylines. In "Acts of Union", a syphallis infected soldier is tricked into marrying an apothecary's spinster-niece. Though the soldier certainly sees himself a victim, his bride seems to have settled for worse, but is left knowing that this is her only opportunity to marry.

There is a certain richness to Donoghue's writing, dealing with religious and social misogyny. Her heroines are strangely tough, vulgar and sometimes shrewd, but there is a undeniable dignity to them. Later characters include a cult leader, a wheel-chair bound woman who leads rescue teams for drowning sailors and a pregnant countess convinced that she'll die during childbirth. One added bonus is that each chapter includes the historic contents of the protagonists, lists the articles and letters that the author used in her research. Not only are the stories based on some reality, but they feel very real. You can not doubt that you have learned something.

A Well Researched Piece of History

This is a true to form Ervand Abrahamian. It is an extremely well researched and referenced piece of history writing. Abrahamian fills the gaps that were left to imagination or at best to the leaked rumors after the Coup. It is an addendum to both his earlier books, Iran Between two Revolutions and A History of Modern Iran.
The book provides unshakable evidence of the CIA’s direct involvement in the coup, return of the Shah and strangulation of a budding democracy in Iran. It also hopefully puts a stop to the arguments of the "Coup Deniers" who have used the present regime’s-- mildly stated-- misdeeds to distort the facts. Undeniably reading the book takes time, despite its small size. The reason is absorption of the references and the unfamiliarity of some of the characters involved, long gone. It should be a book to have and read time and again. To keep the memories alive, to remind further actors who keep inventing the wheel again and again of repeating the same mistakes and to realize the Red Thread that extends from that historical event to today’s Middle East and the blowback it created for the United States. It is a sad but excellent book, but so is history.

The Definitive History of the 1953 Coup
By The Peripatetic Reader
American participation in the CIA overthrow of the sovereign nation in Iran has long been an official secret, long denied by the CIA. The veil of official denial was lifted by the President's oblique apology in Cairo several years ago. It is a historical event largely unknown to the average American, whose only exposure with Iran is the Hostage Crisis of 1979 - 1980. The motivations of the hostage takers are all but unknown. That veil was lifted with the opening minutes of Argo, Ben Afflick's award-winning movie, which very briefly summarized the events which are described in rich, exacting, painstaking detail in Ervand Abrahamian's book.

Abrahamian's book is the definitive historical account of the military coup engineered by American and UK intelligence agencies, a hostile overthrow of an independent, democratic, sovereign nation to exploit its natural resources and substitute in its place a brutal dictatorship. The files of the American and UK intelligence agencies are still classified, no surprise, so Abrahamian account is culled from the files of Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, better known today as British Petroleum (BP), Foreign Office and State Department publications, correspondence, contemporary newspaper and magazine accounts, and interviews and memoirs from the individuals involved in the events described. It is also a definitive account of the history of Iran in the Twentieth Century.

As the author admits, there have been other books written about the military coup in 1953 which overthrew Mohammed Mossadeq. One such book was written by Teddy Roosevelt's grandson, Kermit Roosevelt, one of the principle CIA operatives involved in engineering the coup. This book however has long been out of print, and if available, as it is on this website, the price befits the scarcity of the book. Roosevelt's account of how he overthrew Mossadeq is hardly an objective account or a good source of information. What sets Abrahamian's account apart from other books on the subject is the exacting and scholarly detail with which the author gives to the background of the Iran's nationalization of the oil industry, with a history of BP and its dealings with Iran, influence on the UK and American governments, of the origins of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, better known today as British Petroleum (BP), and the step-by-step account of how the overthrow was achieved.

He expertly describes the post-nationalization negotiations conducted by BP, the UK and American governments, and Mossadeq. Abrahamian definitively describes the schizophrenic policy of the UK government, publically placating the Iranian government, supporting on the one hand the nationalization as a legitimate action of a sovereign nation, but privately on the other doing anything and everything it could to bring about its failure. In this regard Abrahamian debunks the long-held, official view that Mossadeq was responsible for the coup happening because of his intransigence and unwillingness to compromise. Following nationalization BP used every non-military means at its disposal to undo Iran's action. This included legal action to the World Court (they did not prevail, the English judges on the panel finding against the UK!), seeking American support for an invasion of the oil fields (Truman wouldn't have anything to do with it), seeking US help to sanctions (they failed and the UK ultimately experienced significant political blowback later from those efforts), seeking US assistance in brokering some accommodation (they failed too), having English envoys negotiate with Iranian officials (they failed), and petitioning the UN to resolve the dispute (failed). After all these diplomatic and political efforts at arriving at a solution agreeable to both sides failed, US negotiators fashioned a plan which Mossadeq accepted and which appeared to be facially even-handled and fair -- Britain refused the proposed settlement!

One is struck with the healthy and vibrant Iranian democracy which existed before the coup. The nationalization of the oil industry was the result of a long democratic process -- not all Iranian politicians supported nationalization -- and was the result of legislative and congressional (in pre-coup Iran, called Mejlis) debates and discussions. One is struck with the futility and similarity -- then as in now -- of commercial and economic sanctions the Western powers imposed on the country short of actual intervention. One is also struck with the naked exercise of Western Imperialism by BP, the UK, and the US when all other non-invasive methods failed. To be clear nationalization was driven by the long history of officially- sanctioned business abuses and corrupt business practices of BP. Abrahamian goes into great, painstaking detail of these corrupt business practices and of how and in what manner BP systematically shortchanged the Iranian government of royalties due while the concessions were in effect while at the same time exploiting its natural resources.

Abrahamian's tendency is to stick to the documentary record and chronological sequence of events, and this can sometimes be tedious. But this is strength of his account. He is not writing a polemical political tract charged with accusations or invective, although it might be very easy to do so. This is a serious historical account and Abrahamian sticks to and preserves the documentary and/or historical record in all its shocking glory. The effect is dramatic and will make for unforgettable reading.

it must be read, especially by the US readers. Unfortunately that story is little known and yet helps to understand what is going on to-day with the Iranian/US diplomatic relations. As I heard recently on a US TV show, as a reporter was asking questions on the street in front of the White House "Do you know who Mossadegh was ?" : "No, I have no idea, who is he? ", another good one was "I wasn't even born then, why should I know about a coup in Iran in 1954?". and other answers in the same vein...

Mr. Abrahamian did a wonderful, professionnal job, it is clear, easy reading, no repetition, and to end this excellent book, a clear exposé of the blow-back which is occuring to-day (60 years after the coup) between the US and Iran.

A 60-Page Stunner!

This book is one of the most powerful I have read in a long time. When I finished the last few chapters, I physically felt my jaw drop! Don't be fooled by the length of this 60-page stunner; it makes up for any brevity by the sheer power of Mr. Yarbough's message. The Lord has been showing me many of the things contained in this book regarding the absolutely putrid, soulless state of mankind at this present hour. There simply is no other explanation than demonic possession, oppression, and demonic worship to account for the in-your-face wickedness and perversion that is going on today. I believe the fallen ones have been unleashed from the abyss, soulless bodies have been prepared for them, and a war against the Lord Himself and the humanity He loves so much as to die in our place, is being waged right now.

I just want to say thanks to Mr. Yarbough for this book, and for ending it with the gospel message of how to be delivered from hell itself...the blood of Jesus will cover ALL sin.

Best book I've read in a VERY long time!

I've been struggling with issues within myself, after reading this book it opened my eyes to just how many spirits there are and how they effect each of is in everything we do. Our issues could be hereditary (like mother like father) the author was very informative and you can def. Tell he knows what he is talking about. This book to me, gave religion a whole new meaning and better understanding of the 'why' factor. I just couldn't put it down.

"Very Revealing"

This book gives me a better understanding of the distinction between fallen angels and demons. The author explores electromagnetic energy and how it relates to the demonic. He also refutes a popular belief of how the Nephilim returned after the flood. I gave the book 5 stars just for that! What I found most interesting is the possibility of people being born with demonic spirits. A great read for the mature christian.

Master of Cheesecake

Standard for all my reviews: When reviewing products, I always remain objective and honest about the product or service. I always review with information that I feel others would like to know about the product as I always assume what I'm writing will influence for or against the purchase. I always try to go above and beyond surface characteristics and input into quality, value and application. Most importantly, I will always end the review with an answer as to whether I'd purchase the product again which I believe is the most critical question pertaining to the item. To manufacturers: Want me to review your items, just let me know!

We bought two of these recipe books, one for my daughter (16) and one for my niece (6). My daughter loves making cheesecake and this is the perfect book. Instructions are simple enough for my daughter to follow and the results have been great. There's a lot of 'secrets' in this book that provide for making really good cheesecake, beyond just providing simple measurements and bake times. I'm not an accomplished culinary mind or chef, but this book gives you the feeling that you can master the cheesecake!

Definitely recommended and I'd purchase it again.

What a great book

As a displaced New Yorker that frequented this restaurant I can tell you that the recipes here are true to form. I finally got to make the cheesecakes I had grown to love and have missed since moving to Florida. i recommend this boook to anyone with even the slightest cooking talents. Make anything in this book and you won't be sorry you bought the book.

One Fantastic Cheesecake!

This was my Dad's cheesecake. Yes, he was the Master-Baker that was interviewed by Bob Lape the year the cheesecake became famous! He's the short one in the picture with Bob Lape in the "original" Junior's Cookbook, lol.

If you're going to try making the "cupcake cheesecakes," spray the liners with Butter Crisco (or Pam or generic) before you put the batter in - you won't be sorry as the liner almost falls away from the cheesecakes!

This is a very funny gift for someone you know with a big ego or attitude - the cover itself is worth it! The jokes on the inside are cheesy and not clever at all. The lists couldn't be more lame - one list was how to appear smart, which included wearing glasses far down your nose. But it beats a lot of raunchy humor books out there, which are usually just gross and not funny (and not appropriate for giving to some family and friends). The reason to get this is for the cover.

What a hoot!

Ben Goode's writing is for the masses (i.e. anybody).

I gave this little book to my brother (We're both in our 50's and both always vying for family comedian). He said...This is the funniest stuff I ever read.

What I also like is that this book is clean, unlike a bunch of Hollywood junk that passes for comedy these days.

This book is fun! Enjoy!

Not what you think it would speak about

I bought this because I was looking to be more humble, but this book tells you exactly the opposite. It will give you ideas to be less humble. So if you are looking to improve yourself this is not the book. plus its only like 100 pages little book.

Its pure Magic

It is not always that a book touches you to the deepest core. One such book was the 'The Good Earth' by Pearl S Buck. After a very long time I read a book with a similar impact on me. The book has balanced the fast pace of a thriller with the considered pace of dharma teachings. It holds the attention of the reader through out and one starts identifying with the characters- in particular Tenzin Dorje. Tibetan Culture, the Prophecy of Padmasambhav, the dedication of the guru and disciple towards each other is fascinating. It paints a picture of a different more gentle world where one can imagine art and culture flowered. On the other hand the cut throat world of big business flows with its relentless pursuit of winning at all cost. And at the point when dharma crosses the corporate path, magic happens.

Then through a series of conversations, the teacher explains the correct perspective on issues troubling the young hero. These conversations are universal in their appeal and would benefit anyone reading the books. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand & apply Buddhist thought to their daily lives. Congratulation for having written a very very special book.

Fascinating Novel

This was a very nice book. I have read a number of books by David Michie and I very much like his personable style of writing that takes you right into the characters and situations. This book was more suspenseful and surprising than his novels regarding the Dali Lhama's cat (which are delightful to read). This book was no less interesting a blend of old Tibetan and modern times. A worthy read.
