Excellent micro economic analysis of sports
By Adam
This book was the textbook for my Economics of Sports class and it has been one of my favorite textbooks that I've had. The authors have related most intermediate micro economic terms to sports in a way that helps you to understand both well. There are a good amount of diagrams and examples along with clear writing to make you understand the subjects. Highly recommended.

The Resilience Factor: Seven Essential Skills For Overcoming Life's Inevitable Obstacles, by Karen Reivich, Andrew Shatte

Resilience is a crucial ingredient–perhaps the crucial ingredient–to a happy, healthy life. More than anything else, it's what determines how high we rise above what threatens to wear us down, from battling an illness, to bolstering a marriage, to carrying on after a national crisis. Everyone needs resilience, and now two expert psychologists share seven proven techniques for enhancing our capacity to weather even the cruelest setbacks.

The science in The Resilience Factor takes an extraordinary leap from the research introduced in the bestselling Learned Optimism a decade ago. Just as hundreds of thousands of people were transformed by "flexible optimism," readers of this book will flourish, thanks to their enhanced ability to overcome obstacles of any kind. Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté are seasoned resilience coaches and, through practical methods and vivid anecdotes, they prove that resilience is not just an ability that we're born with and need to survive, but a skill that anyone can learn and improve in order to thrive.

Readers will first complete the Resilience Questionnaire to determine their own innate levels of resilience. Then, the system at the heart of The Resilience Factor will teach them to:

• Cast off harsh self-criticisms and negative self-images
• Navigate through the fallout of any kind of crisis
• Cope with grief and anxiety
• Overcome obstacles in relationships, parenting, or on the job
• Achieve greater physical health
• Bolster optimism, take chances, and embrace life

In light of the unprecedented challenges we've recently faced, there’s never been a greater need to boost our resilience. Without resorting to feel-good pap or quick-fix clichés, The Resilience Factor is self-help at its best, destined to become a classic in the genre.

Amazon.com Review
In the capable hands of psychologists Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté, resilience is not a Band-Aid or a buzzword. It is a habit of mind. The Resilience Factor is a practical roadmap for navigating unexpected challenges, surprises, and setbacks at work and home. Their premise--that your thinking style determines your resilience--underlies the books promise: you can boost resilience by changing the way you think about adversity.

The authors synthesize decades of research in cognitive psychology, particularly the work of Aaron Beck and Martin Seligman, to create seven practical strategies for bouncing back. Each strategy demonstrates how "thinking styles" affect emotions and behavior. "The secret is accurate thinking, not positive thinking," they explain. After completing a "Resilience Questionnaire," readers learn to turn off negative thoughts, avoid thinking traps, detect "icebergs"--the basic beliefs that cause us to overreact--and restore perspective. Each strategy is illustrated with vivid examples, including acting-out teenagers, battle-torn marriages, downsized workplaces, and the loss of loved ones. This insightful book offers clear descriptions of resilient thinking and workable tools for changing our minds. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Reivich and Shatté's book is reminiscent of the bestselling Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, not just in the number of skills it discusses, but in the approach the authors take, too. They focus on the thinking rather than feeling side of the human psyche, but their intent is to ultimately affect readers' emotional reactions through helping them reprogram their thoughts. University of Pennsylvania professors Shatté and Reivich argue that feelings are a result of thinking; therefore, by changing the way one thinks, one can control one's emotional reactions to stressful situations. They promote an "ABC" system: "A" stands for adversity ("what pushes your buttons"), "B" is your inherent belief about life, which triggers your responding actions and feelings, or "C" ("consequences"). The A's are bound to keep hitting us, but if we analyze and revamp our B's, our C's will improve, resulting in greater peace and happiness. Although skeptics may not be convinced that changing one's thoughts can change one's life, the book could be of help to those who feel powerless over their emotions. Agent, Richard Pine.

The Best of Self-Help
By A Customer
As a psychologist, I have read a lot of self-help books. Typically, I'm disappointed by the flimsy substance and empty "pump up" aphorisms. I was prepared to think the same of The Resilience Factor -- but I was wrong. The Resilience Factor is based on years of scientific research into the "ingredients" of resilience and seven skills that can increase your resilience no matter how resilient (or un-resilient) you are today. The authors describe the work they have done with children, parents, and corporate employees and how these skills can improve your productivity and happiness. Better yet, the book is filled with vivid, compelling case studies (and a lot of humor) which makes the book a pleasure to read. I will recommend this book to all of my clients (and my family and friends). It's a must-read.

Exactly right
By Susannah Bailin
All self-help has the same message -- you can only make positive choices in your life if you can figure out what choices you are making without any thought and then changing course by adding understanding. Most processes expect you to figure out why you do what you do by yourself and then layer their method on top to solve your issues. This process has so many different ways to explore your old habits that you can not help but change and make better choices. My only caveat is that you read this book over a long period of time; perhaps one chapter a week to truly process all of the information.I also suggest reading that chapter before bed and letting your subconscious mull over its lessons overniight. Excellent!

Exploration of Resilience Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy
By O. Merce Brown
****
This book was an exploration, via cognitive behavioral therapy, of resilience, and gives the reader seven skills to master to increase their own resilience. The two authors, who are also resilience researchers, call these skills: emotion regulation, impulse control, empathy, causal analysis, self-efficacy, and reaching out. These seven skills can be measured (and the book includes self-tests), learned (through practicing concepts discussed in the book) and continually improved.

Although this book was enormously helpful to me, it does cover only the aspect of resilience that responds to CBT, and thus is somewhat narrow in scope. It doesn't explore spiritual aspects of resilience, or other approaches, just cognitive behavioral therapy. However, it does this quite well. In addition, the writing style was academic, so I felt as though I was reading a text, and it was a bit of work to get through it rather than fun. Note that in this paperback version the text is small; I struggled especially with the text size in the inset boxes. Still, with those limitations, it covered the topic well and will be very useful to me.

Recommended.

Think I'll read it again.
By Raquel A.
A common theme among so many of the reviews is that people didn't like the serial concept. I didn't mind it so much. I pre-purchased the booking knowing that it was a serial and I looked at it like a weekly tv show, where you always had to wait for the next episode. It was an interesting concept. I'm not sure I'd love it for a longer story, but I think it worked just fine for Blank Slate.

As for the story itself, I felt that waiting for each episode was worth it. I loved the cliffhangers with each episode. I loved not knowing where Tiffany was going to take me every two weeks and I liked that I couldn't flip to the end to see what would happen. I loved these characters, not as much as I love the characters in the Kathleen Turner series, but they were still quite enjoyable to spend time with.

And now that I have all the episodes and it's a complete story, I may just have to read it again as on full length book.

Fun on the edge of my seat
By Chelsea Ellenberg
I fell in love with this author with her Kathleen Turner series and was excited to see a new book (serial) release. As expected, I read each new episode as soon as they streamed into my kindle and I didn't want the story to end. I can't say enough about her writing, its so easy to fall into each story and loose track of time.

Loved This One
By Beverly
This book is nonstop action! I never lost interest in the story and I fell in love with Erik and Clarissa immediately. Tiffany Snow has done an excellent job of creating believable characters and a story line that does not disappoint. I loved that Clarissa was such a strong female character who had many things to teach FBI Agent Erik Langston. Blank Slate is an engrossing tale in which you won't mind spending a single minute. Absolutely loved this book!

That Knight Winthrop is one charming guy!
By A Customer
This was DEFINITELY the best of the trilogy. NightFire was too emotionally draining and NightStorm was too abrupt or something!
Anyway, I enjoyed Knight's character. He's charming, easy going, light hearted and funny. A confirmed bachelor, no one can believe it when he takes in Lily and her three children.
Lily tells Knight that she is the widow of his cousin who was recently killed in Brussels and that she is the mother to Laura Beth and step-mother to Theo and Sam. Of course, Lily has not told Knight the complete truth and is terrified that he, unused to children, will lose patience and throw them all out into the street. She is surprised to find him tolerant of the children's antics (the scene with Laura Beth in Knight's study drawing is hysterical!) and he is surprised to find himself not only enjoying the children, but also incredibly attracted to Lily. Of course what neither of them knows is that Knight's cousin was murdered and that somewhere among Lily and the children's things are hidden jewels that two criminals are looking for thus endangering Lily and the children. So there's the mystery of the jewels to be solved, and the relationship of Lily and Knight to be resolved with lots of fun along the way.
This was a nice, sweet story and Knight and Lily make a cute couple. An enjoyable read!

Love Coulter but at times this was not 5 stars!
By J. Brennan
I really find Knight just an amazing character. You could start to tell in Night Fire that he had great potential. His attitude about love, romance, children - so many strong feelings about things - he just thought he would marry at 40 and then have an heir and leave the child rearing to his wife and continue remotely from afar being and absentee father and husband. Wow - did his life change at 27 when his dead cousins wife, Lily appears at his door destitute and with his 3 children. Lily was such an intriguing, beautiful woman and those children just totally set his life in an unsettled state. I don't know which captivated Knight more - the children or Lily!! I guess the only reason I did not give this 5 stars would be - too much children. I realize they were important to the story but I just don't enjoy that much chilren - prefer more intense love story. and that might be another one of my complaints Knight thinks eventually that Lily is a loose woman - although he wants to wed her even though he believes this. I am not exactly sure why he felt this way. For many reasons though I would recommend this book the second in the series!!

Truly Great!
By A Customer
Of the many chess books I have read i still believe this book is the best ever. Chernev is probably one of the best chess authors ever and this book is his best in my opinion. He has a unique style in annotation that could make any game interesting, but these are the best! Twelve of the greatest chess players in history (as of about 1975) and their chess masterpieces are included, and Chernev studied over many books so as not to leave anything important out in his annotation. This not only shows the beauty in chess but is very instructional too! It also has a short bio of each of the great's and even some humorous anecdotes about some players. This book should be owned by every chess player, Novice to Master, Serious Student or Casual Player, it is a MUST for EVERYONE!

got me excited about chess
By Victor Hart
I read this book when I was about 10 and it vastly improved my chess at the time, while making the world of chess exciting to me even if I couldn't understand all the variations and subtleties.

Just wanted to mention that it was later rereleased as "Twelve Great Chess Players and Their Best Games", which you can buy new.

A wonderfully illustrated look at Alexander the Great
By Lawrance Bernabo
Robin Lane Fox considers Alexander the Great to be the world's first authentic hero. Having retraced Alexander's 10 year, 11,000-mile march in carving out his empire and written a prize-winning biography, "Alexander the Great," the author certainly has the credentials to back up this particular book. "The Search for Alexander" emphasizes the conqueror's personality, motivation, and incredible ambition that consistently overcame severe obstacles of geography, weather, morale, and food supply. Consequently, this book reads more like a detective story, sifting through the historical record to make his best case for what really happened and why. "The Search for Alexander" contains more than 220 photographs, 135 in full cover, including striking pictures of the royal tombs discovered at Vergina, Greece in 1977, which Lane Fox argues is the burial place of Alexander's father, Philip II. If you have even a passing interest in the subject, this is a fascinating book, whether you are content just to look at the pictures or are really interested in the historiography involved in this volume.

Well worth the money!
By Carolyn
I thoroughly enjoyed Robin Lane Fox's book "The Search for Alexander". The book was very interesting and informative and the photographs were outstanding. The only thing I was disappointed in was on page 68 is a photo of the head of a statue that might be Hephaestion, and it is placed too close to the edge of the page so that the nose is cut off. I have also read Mr. Fox's books "Alexander the Great" and "The Making of Alexander". I have enjoyed reading and re-reading all three of his books. I find Mr. Fox to be a very likeable man and his books are very fair to Alexander. I highly recommend all of Robin Lane Fox's books.

What Is This Thing Called Science?, 4e, by Alan Chalmers

A brand new edition of an internationally renowned science bestseller Now well into its fourth decade, What is this thing called science? has become something of a classic the world over, available in nineteen languages. Each decade Alan Chalmers has drawn on his experience as a teacher and researcher to improve and update the text. In his accessible style, Chalmers illuminates the major developments in the field over the past few years. The most significant feature of this new, fourth, edition is the addition of an extensive postscript, in which Chalmers uses the results of his recent research into the history of atomism to illustrate and enliven key themes in the philosophy of science. Identifying the qualitative difference between knowledge of atoms as it figures in contemporary science and metaphysical speculations about atoms common in philosophy since the time of Democritus proves to be a highly revealing and instructive way to pinpoint key features of the answer to the question 'What is this thing called science?' This new edition ensures that the book holds its place as the leading introduction to the philosophy of science for the foreseeable future. "Successive editions have retained and refined its clear, engaging and witty discussions of the most important topics in the field, incorporating the best new research in the field. Review

Comments on the previous edition: This timely and valuable revision will do much to preserve What is this thing called Science? as the best overall introductory textbook in the philosophy of science available in the English language. The new chapters give an insightful and concise treatment of major developments in the field from the last two decades, in the same accessible and lively style that made the first two editions such successes. . . . I would recommend the new edition heartily. . . . --Hasok Chang, University College London

This is a very good book for use in introductory Philosophy of Science courses
By Michael F. Goodman
This is a very good book for use in introductory Philosophy of Science courses. As a secondary reader, you'll need to supplement the text with actual readings from philosophers of science. For example, while Chalmer's chapter on Thomas Kuhn is well done, you can only go into so much depth about Kuhn's program in 22 pages. It needs supplementing with a reading from Kuhn; let Kuhn do some talking, as it were. I do think Chalmers spends too much time on falsificationism (3 chapters), even though that theory of science was enormously influential for a time. The other thing is that I would have liked Chalmers to have included more work on the two primary goals of science, to wit, explanation and prediction, and what philosophers of science have had to say about these concepts, what problems exist and so on. So, for example, there is no sustained study in the book on Carl Hempel's Deductive-Nomological model of scientific explanation. That's just one example. While I know that Chalmer's can't do everything in the book that he/we would like, some things are missing that shouldn't be. Good, book, though; well written, good examples from the history of science, a lot to talk about.

Excellent, easy to read material
By Khana
I got this as a textbook for a Philosophy of Science class, and I honestly enjoyed the read. That's not really normal! Even for me!

Seriously, it made me wish that I was taught these concepts in high school. While I fear that many high schoolers would be a less than pleased with the information density - it is, after all, suitable for a university class - it nonetheless presents information in an extremely helpful way, to better understand what exactly science is, and just as importantly, what it is not.

This is definitely going to be added to my "recommended" list of books!

We want to know!
By Vincent Poirier
The bad news is that Chalmers doesn't answer the question the title asks, at least not in a deeply satisfying way. The good news is that he leaves us with a deep conviction that we are in fact justified in believing something true when it is scientific. But why is that? Why does calling a fact or a theory "scientific" help us accept it? This question leads us to asking the deeper question "What is science?" and while we only get an incomplete answer to that, we get enough to convince us that when knowledge is gained from results of scientific investigations and tested hypothesis, it has authority.

There is a common sense view of science that happens to be wrong: science is the slow, progressive accumulation of factual truths, that the sum total of today's scientific knowledge is an large edifice built brick by brick. It is a fairly recent view of science, simply because science itself, as we know it today, is a recent invention, one really beginning around the sixteenth century. Before that we had philosophy, which did investigate the physical and biological world, but also politics, ethics, the nature of reality, the soul, the gods and so on. (Mathematicians worked then pretty much the same way they work today, but mathematics isn't exactly science.)

Science as a slow progression is easy to understand, it seems obvious, and it supports the authority of science as a trustworthy institution, so why is this view wrong? Because science is full of big ideas and those ideas change all the time. The earth was flat, now it's round. The earth was fixed, now it orbits the sun. Things used to be made of fire, air, water and earth now they are made up of a hundred or so atomic elements assembled into millions of different molecules. There's no slow development here!

Empiricism was our first attempt to better understand the nature of knowledge. It closely matched the slow progress view of science, but it was deeper and different because it accepted that the physical world had to be studied on its own term. If we see, smell, touch or hear something we know those sense impressions. For empiricists, sensory experience is the foundation of all knowledge. For a while, it was a convincing account of science.

The problem with empiricism however is that it breaks down when the scientific enterprise leaves what can be directly experienced. We can only see the variety of life on earth and what relates different organisms together today, but we cannot _see_ the 500 million years of evolution, yet we are justified in saying birds descend from dinosaurs and that we humans descend from australopithecus. We can only see a needle move on a voltmeter, but we can't actually _see_ 120 volts of electricity even though we are justified in saying we know that's the potential in a standard North American wall outlet.

The nineteenth century attempted to correct empiricism or propose new theories of knowledge, but it's only in the twentieth century that two very different, very convincing attempts attracted widespread attention: first falsification and second structure.

Instead of justifying our knowledge as being true knowledge of the world, falsificationism dismisses the question and asserts that we _cannot_ know the world. We can propose a hypothesis and check it; if it fails the test, we reject the hypothesis but if it passes, we accept it provisionally. A rejection is conclusive: we were wrong. Provisional acceptance is just grounds to look harder. This view is actually how most of science works today and it's what actually gives it its authority: scientists constantly check their facts and are always out to debunk something. And when they publish, they have to worry about being proved wrong. This makes them very careful.

However, falsificationism, proposed and perfected by Karl Popper from the 1920s through the 1990s, doesn't really explain the _progress_ made by science. It's fine to say scientists will make this daring hypothesis or this bold conjecture, but where do these come from? After all, most of the time science does evolve bit-by-bit. It's plain not a series of conjectures each one bolder than the last. The Gregorian calendar was an incremental improvement over the Julian calendar (and it's worth mentioning both assumed the earth at the center). Small differences between what we expected to see and what we actually saw were successfully explained by tweaking the earth-centric model: the sun and moon go around the earth, but the planets go around the sun (which still goes around the earth). Eventually all those little tweaks made everything rather heavy and further progress was very very difficult. And that's when Copernicus proposed that the earth went around the sun.

A bold conjecture that came not from any single refutation of a previous idea, but from the slow realization that we'd reached a wall; that we had to try something new. The earth centred theory gave way in one sweeping moment to a sun centred model. Initially, that did not solve anything and it also had to be tweaked: the earth and the planets did not move around the sun move in circles, but in ellipses. And again we are back to the slow progress that comes from working out the details of the model. This is the structure of scientific revolution proposed by philosopher Thomas Kuhn in 1963.

It's interesting that both Popper and Kuhn give up any ambition of knowing the truth. Perhaps that is the reason why these two philosophies of science leave us a little dissatisfied: we want to know!

The New Way.......
By Jeremy Zach
Chris is addressing an epidemic problematic state YM is facing. YM ministry does not need a nice and neat cool program to attract students. YM needs people to not only unconditionally love and care for them, but walk with them in the midst of their spiritual journey. Adults need to be co-labors with students as they discover who God is and who God is in their life. Chris is, hence the title, formulating a new way to orchestrate YM. Chris is giving a bird's eye perspective of the realities and practicalities of what needs to happen in YM. Chris is giving an articulation and language to the YM problem. Chris argues for a re-culturing of YM.
Re-culturing means a new: understanding of culture, students, and YM, methodology, teaching, leadership, discipleship, evangelism, missions, and weekly programs. Essentially a re-culturing means a YM make over. Changes happen over time. It is a gradual process. In the Church world, change is a very-very slow process. Also, people in Church do not like change or to be taught a new way. Chris is pioneering into a new way of doing youth ministry. Now, Youth workers, pastors, parents, students, and church people need to catch up with him.
Chris gives great practical principles that one can import into YM, but he does not a give a solid theological foundation to argue for and why there needs to be a re-culturation. I would have loved to see a theological chapter with applicable comments speaking to the new way of reculturing YM.
The traditionalists, who do not like to deviate from their way, may give hard resistance to Chris's new way. It appeared Chris was already expecting the resistance. Throughout the book, Chris kept re-clarifying himself so the "traditionalist" would not miss interpret him. Chris would make a wonderful claim, and in the next paragraph would start with: I am not suggesting that..... I noticed Chris was trying too hard to please both his advocates and aggressors. Chris would make a profound statement and follow the statement with: I did not mean this or I am not suggesting this. If people do not like it, let them, and not you, deal with it.
I love the missional chapter of this book. YM needs to move from mission trips to living missionally. We need to be going global, but also we need to be going local. We need to be God's people bringing our local communities reconciliation and restoration. We need stop talking about the Gospel, and start walking out the gospel. Living missionally makes being a follower of Christ very practical and experiential. A student does not need to go to Africa in order to be a part of missionary work. In fact, a student can go down the street to do mission work, by simply being the Gospel to all people. Also, Chris gives wonderful charts, real life examples, resources, and tangible tool for youth workers who want to incorporate the ideas of living missionally.
There needed to be a chapter devoted to reculturing parents. If a youth minister begins to import the ideologies reculturation in their youth ministry, parents are going to freak out if they are not prepared adequately. Parents need to be recultured in addition to YM. Parents are going to start to wonder why youth group does not have all of the fun power point games with prizes anymore? Seemingly, if one is going to begin to reculture their youth ministry, the church at large and parents also need to be on board with the recutlturation process. There is nothing worst then having a parent who is feeling out of the loop to what is happening in the YM. While considering how the YM needs to be re-cultured, one needs to consider how the parent needs to be re-cultured so they can understand, support, and encourage the YM in the new way. With a new way of YM, means a new way to communicating, connecting, and relating to parents.
I give Chris's book two thumbs up! Chris not only coined language to the new way of YM, but illustrated how to orchestrate a new way of YM. I believe Chris has dropped a bomb on the YM world and now the YM world needs ask themselves: am I going to react or embrace this new way of doing YM. Chris's method is not a model, but practical principles that aim at the core needs of today's students. It is up to the youth minister to contextually, theologically, and practically develop a plan suited to his or her youth ministry that can begin to execute the new way.

To "Me" Centric - Not enough scripture - Too full of meaningless post modernism buzzwords
By R. J. Ellis
Some things I liked about the book:
- some quite practical points that should be taken on board and would be really helpful - and look no ministry is perfect – all could be done better - that’s life!
- Some good honest thoughts about general faults of youth ministry etc
- I like how he (Chris) talks about getting along side people etc – the people focus/love

Some real concerns about this book
- I think he (Chris) spends too much time running down what has been done in the past in youth ministry by others etc or what he has done in the past as a basis for promoting his “new way” – helps to sell the book
- He generalises too much about other ministries to promote his reculturing/new way presentation – that is the Brian Mclaren style
- He outs those who criticise him to justify his case
- He is a little too ”ME” centric – actually that might be my biggest criticism – far too many ‘I’,’ME’, ‘MY’ words
- Full of the emergent/post modern buzzwords like "spiritual transformation" - but what does he really mean scripturally?
- Not enough scripture at all – this is how ministries ultimately move away from God over years
Example: he never uses the word “Cross” (of Christ) once in the book – But he talks of people purging themselves of sin – well how do you purge yourself of sin – the bible tells us how but Chris doesn’t!

So it gets a very low mark for me because the inadequacies of the book strongly outway the good
